THE CHANCE AT A MOMENT

The London 2012 Olympics has come to a close.

Amidst all the event highlights and lowlights, one tweet won gold for me --

"What will never change about the Olympics:
the respect I have for someone
willing to invest four years
for the chance at a moment."
-- sports business analysts Darren Rovell

Relate. Relate. Relate.

I'm no athlete. Far from being one. But I know how it is to invest and commit 'everything' to a dream. Yes, for the chance AT A MOMENT.

Sometimes, you wish the moment could last longer. But once you realize how glorious the moment was, you know it's more, more, more than enough.

Everyone who risks is a winner.

Cheers to us!

THE BODYGUARD

Jennifer Hudson beautifully sang at The Grammys. Friends posted their favorite songs on Facebook. People did Whitney karaoke nights.

In honor of  Whitney Houston, I watched (er, endured) "The Bodyguard." It was my first time to see it. Muntik ko nang hindi kayanin. Out of respect, tinapos ko. I'm cheesy. Pero may hangganan pala.

The biggest surprise: While I was watching, Hubby revealed that he actually saw it back in 1992.

Hubby: "It was as big as Ghost."
Me: "OK, Honey, I will always love you... Sa presinto ka magpaliwanag."

Hahaha.

Anyway, I was more moved by Kevin Costner's eulogy six days ago. "I was your pretend bodyguard once...and now you're gone too soon." And after talking about Whitney's insecurities, he ended with "When you sing before Him, don't you worry. You will be good enough." He made me cry.

I may not have liked the film but yes, I know, as long as there are love stories (happy or sad), Whitney's songs will live on.

HAPPY HEARTS DAY

We don't do Valentine's. Read previous post about it here. Our dates, little acts of love, exchange of "I love yous" are not confined to February 14. We're mushy all year round. If you're into it, hope you had a Happy Hearts Day! To each his own. Walang basagan ng trip. Lol.

But I have a confession: I fell in love with the Google doodle for Valentine's 2012.

The message is so simple and true -- love is never about the stuff. As a couple who's more into living an enriching life than a rich life, relate na relate kami. *teary eyed*

Washington Post puts it perfectly, "...the determined boy inadvertently finds the answer that was before him all along: The jump rope is the ultimate heartstring to pluck. Together, at last, in rhythm, their hearts skip a beat."

Awww.

SOUNDS FAMILIAR?

16 January 2012: Historic day for the Philippines as it marks the start of the Corona Trial.

To help me better understand the Impeachment Case, I read this primer (Thanks to my friend C for sharing).

Under the articles of impeachment, this line sounded too familiar:

"Following the mass resignation (of the members of the John Hay Management Corporation), Mrs. Corona got promoted."

FIRST GIFTS OF 2012

Mid-way into January 2012 and gifts are pouring in!

THANK YOU, God!
  1. Today's Greatest Gift: my nephew T. He was the reason why we took a short trip to Manila. The last delivery update when we were still in SG: "Lalabas na. Anytime!" So we booked a flight and waited...for a week! Puro false labor, hehe. We had to fly out Saturday night, wala pa rin. Finally, nag-totoong labor na ang sister-in-law ko the next day, Sunday, when we were already back in SG. Baby T was born today, Monday, 16 January 2012. Pilyong bata ito! Hahaha. Nevertheless, we're very grateful. Mom and Baby survived the delicate delivery. Thanks to our Dear Doc, Ate P who took great care of them. We're all so happy! And way too excited! My parents want to go home for Baby T (sorry, Papa and Mama, hindi kayo 3.5 hours away from Manila). Today, 16 Jan 2012, is a historic day for the Philippines as it marks Day 1 of the Corona Trial. But for our family, Baby T's birth is the more important headline. *confetti blast*
It's a boy! 6.10 lbs.
Today, my niece S is officially an Ate.
Welcome, Baby T! We love you.

      2.  The Manila break.
      3.  More projects. *big smile*
      4.  Green Card.

"And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; Seek, and you shall find; Knock, and it shall be opened unto you." (Luke 11:9)

MARINA BAY 2012 FIREWORKS

Sharing my video of the Marina Bay Countdown 2012 fireworks display.

"Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make them go, oh, oh, oh
You're gonna leave them falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon..."

HAPPY 2012!

NATURE'S REMINDER

"We may have humored ourselves and seen the human race as a master of nature; in truth, elementally, we are, and always have been, at its mercy." (PDI, March 2011)

Remembering our family's Ondoy experience. And all the other natural calamities that hit the Philippines, and the rest of the world. Truly humbling.

Let's continue praying for everyone, especially for the families hit by Sendong. May God bless us all.

Coca-Cola Where Will Happiness Strike Next: The OFW Project

KAIYAK! Being part of an OFW Family, I can so relate! Time with family is priceless.

Nice one, Coke.

For that, I'll open more bottles and cans of happiness. =)

BENCAB's SANTAN

As I mentioned on my Elephant Parade entry, we're bent on seeing BenCab's Santan (Proud Pinoys!). So we dropped by the Singapore Art Museum over the weekend. At andun nga siya, in what seems to be a prime spot (sa harap mismo ng museum entrance, katabi ng SAM logo) - bongga!

BenCab's Santan at The SAM

Inked

 "Santan...addresses the fact
that overpopulation, human-animal conflict
was some of the reasons
as to the dwindling numbers
of elephants in the wild." --
Elephantparade.com

Circus in Town?
It's the Elephant Parade!

P.S.
We saw more of the elephants at the Raffles Place MRT station but it was raining too hard to take photos. I think I found my favorite elephant there -- a golden one, decorated with bolts. I'll make time for a photo op soon.

17 November 2011

ELEPHANT PARADE

Our first sighting of the elephants was at The Shoppes at The Marina Bay Sands, when we watched the "Wonder Full" show last 11.11.11. This week, we saw them again along Orchard Road.

Yep, there's an Elephant Parade here in SG! According to the website, "The Elephant Parade is the world's largest open air art exhibition of decorated elephant statues to attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation." (These are no 'white elephants.' Lol.)

Read that "there are 160 life-sized fiberglass baby elephants, painted and decorated by international artists and celebrities."

We hope to spot more of them.

Filipino Artist BenCab (he opened Hubby's first photo exhibit last July) supports the Parade, see story here. We'll try to visit BenCab's "Santan" at the Singapore Art Museum.

7 BILLIONTH BABY

From the Inquirer -

The world's 7 billionth person will be born on Monday into what UN leader Ban Ki-moon calls a "world of contradiction"...

"Plenty of food, but still a billion people going to bed hungry every night. Many people enjoy luxurious lifestyles, but still many people are impoverished."

LOVE OR RELIGION?

The question for Ms. Philippines Shamcey Supsup in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held today in Brazil: Would you change your religion to marry someone you love?

First thing that popped in my head: My Hubby did that for me. Haba ng hair ko? LOL

If Shamcey answered along the lines of World Peace, ala-"When religions coexist, leaders communicate, media respect neutrality...and citizens needs take precedence over profitability...peace becomes a reality, the world lives in harmony...," would she have won the crown? Just wondering.

THE PHILIPPINES DESERVES A VISIT FROM THE WORLD

I'm supporting Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez's call to promote the country any which way we can. Because, yes, I agree, "we deserve a visit from the world."

I'm re-posting an entry from November 2010, My Top Picks for the Philippines...

...I know there are more than three must-sees in our country. But for now, allow me to talk about my Top Three.

#1 Palawan

I've been to Palawan thrice. First with college friends right after graduation, then with J to celebrate our First Wedding Anniversary, then with my family months ago. I've only seen parts of Puerto Princesa, Sabang and Port Barton. I know there's so much more to explore. My impression: If you love the beach, minus the parties, this is where you should go. One of my life dreams is to have a family vacation home in Palawan. But the more immediate goal is to see Coron soon.

Above, Clockwise:

Fallen tree by the beach;
Off to the Monkey Trail
(Most people go to the Underground River via a 20-minute boat ride.
We chose to take the 2-hour trek);
Me, floating on water (haha);
Us on a duyan (a cradle);
rock formation in Port Barton;
baby crocs at the Crocodile Farm;
hard hats as anti-bat pee/poo gear;
exiting the Underground River;
Bulol swimming at the Star Fish Island.

A bit from our date: I remember us taking a 2-hour jeepney ride from our overnight stay in Port Barton back to Puerto Princesa. I was seated inside the jeep, together with most of the commuters while J was on the vehicle's roof (yes, top ride!), together with three squealing pigs and a couple of other locals. My husband's fearless. Sometimes, his adventurous spirit could give me a heart attack! Needless to say, I was frantic the entire trip (couldn't sit still, was worried sick about him, especially on the zigzag roads!). Why did I allow him to take the top ride? He's a pro. As a mountaineer, he's done it a gazillion times. And I didn't want to be a kill-joy so I agreed. Thank God we got to our destination safe and sound.

LONELY PLANET: "Palawan is one of the real treasures of the Philippines...Due in equal parts to its rugged topography, its small population and its distance from other islands in the archipelago, Palawan has managed to stay largely pristine.

Palawan's world-class diving, snorkelling and jungle trekking make it a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure-sports fans. The fantastic seascapes of the Bacuit Archipelago, the wrecks around Coron Town and the magical lakes of Coron Island should rank high on any visitor's list. You could spend a lifetimediscovering new islands, beaches and reefs, particularly around northern Palawanand Busuanga Island.

With convenient and quick plane and ferry connections from Luzon, Palawan is easy to get to. With few paved roads, however, it can be time consuming to travel overland around Palawan. But the views along the way are usually worth the time and effort. Of course, in the wet season, which usually runs here from June to September, road travel can be difficult in the days following a heavy rain. But, it is possible to travel in Palawan during the wet season, and many people enjoy the brilliant sunsets that come with the clouds.

All told, we consider Palawan to be one of the most rewarding outdoor-sports destinations not just in the Philippines, but in all of Southeast Asia."

#2 Sagada

I'm proud to have survived the adventures of Sagada! It was J's nth visit, my first. We were there to celebrate our Second Wedding Anniversary. Considering my limited outdoors experience and skills, it was my roughest but most rewarding travel experience so far! As for J, walang-wala sa kanya (it was peanuts), haha.

Above, Clockwise:
The rickety mini bus we rode from Baguio to Sagada
(Glad the hell ride was worth it!);
Bulol by the Sagada Bell;
Echo Mountain;
Take a peek inside the Sagada Church;
Bulol by the Pine Trees;
J hanging off the cliff! (Told you he's fearless.);
Locals dancing in the dap-ayan;
gorgeous rock formations;
hanging coffins;
Bulol by the lamp, inside the Sumaging Cave;
we went trekking;
a cow guarding one of the tomb stones at the local cemetery;
Center: That's us inside the adventure-filled Sumaging Cave
(expect to trek, rapel, walk through ice-cold, neck-deep water,
crawl through holes)

I'm a Sagada Survivor!

A bit from our date: My favorite moment was napping one afternoon in the Sagada park (near the Church), engulfed by the scent of pine trees, with the locals singing and dancing one-hundred feet away, while J watched over me. It remains to be one of the most relaxing moments of my life.

LONELY PLANET: "The absence of noise and pollution are probably the first things you'll appreciate about Sagada, a tranquil mountaintop town where you can walk down the middle of the road and only occasionally be disturbed by a passing vehicle. Backpackers have been flocking here for years to enjoy the incredible mountain scenery, cheap dope and companionship of like-minded travellers.

Sagada fills up quickly in the March-to-May high season. But despite its popularity it manages to stave off changes that would detract from its appeal as an 'ecotourism' destination - there are no massive hotels or blaring discos, and videoke is conspicuously absent. For many Sagadans, the traditional way of life remains intact. During harvest celebrations, women wear tapis while older men don G-strings and gather in the dap-ay; chickens are sacrificed, gongs are played and general merriment ensues.

Sagadans are of Applai (Northern Kankanay) ancestry and their native language is Kankanay although, as in the rest of the Cordilleras, Ilocano and English are widely spoken.

It can get chilly at night, especially from December to February, when temperatures can drop as low as 4°C. From March to May, temperatures rise as high as 30°C during the day. The rest of the year is the wet season, when the normal pattern is a sunny, pleasant morning followed by a heavy, long afternoon shower."

#3 Batanes (though we've never been here)

"Taming the wind and the waters in the northernmost Philippine frontier, the relatively isolated islands of the Batanes, the home of the resilient and welcoming Ivatans, with its rolling hills, subtropical climate, ancient cultures, windswept traditional stone houses and breathtaking landscapes and seascapes which perhaps make it one of the prettiest corners of the world." -- http://tourism-philippines.com/batanes/

If J and I could see only one more Pinas Spot, we'd both choose Batanes. I always hear about travelers being taken back in time, as if they're transported to a totally different world.

Just how untouched is Batanes? Read about the Honesty Cafe. I wonder if there's something like it anywhere else in the world. Only in the Philippines!

SIX DEGREES WITH PARIS HILTON

Paris Hilton is in Manila. No, I didn't get to see her (have no plans of doing so). But just for fun, I'm playing six degrees, haha.

Paris arrives at the NAIA.
Every one wants a piece of her.

Paris had dinner with Manny & Jinky Pacquiao.
Makati Shangrila Hotel

Read from chuvaness.com that Paris is here for Century Properties' latest project, Azure.

Among Century Properties' award-winning high-rise projects is Essensa. Other Century Property condos: the SOMA project at the Fort, Grand Soho, Century City in Makati, the Versace-designed Milano Residences, Acqua, and our condo, Soho Central.

There's the connection! She endorses Century Properties, we live in a Century Properties project. Ang layo. LOL. So magka-level na ba kami? Hindi rin. Hahaha!

Paris with the Antonios,
the real estate family behind Century Properties.

Does the Paris connection make Century Properties' Soho Central a more prime property? Will that be good for us if we do decide to sell our unit as we go on our SG adventure? We'll see. *wink*

EARTH-SHAKING KIND OF LOVE

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Luzon at around 1:15am today, July 26, 2011.

I felt the building shake but I thought I was just dreaming (slept at 11pm).

The quake did not wake me up. It was J's hug that did.

The tremors lasted for around 30 seconds. Hubby was holding me, comforting me, being very protective of me the whole time. Awwww.

Yes, in the middle of an earthquake, I was still my mushy self, thanking life for allowing me to experience a love so strong it shakes me to my core.

I LOVE LIFE!

TODAY'S GIFTS 051011

Today's Gifts:

1) Our photographer volunteered to do a video shoot for the show's opening title (instead of our original stills concept), no extra charge. That's why we love working with him. And we're happy with the quality of the output.

2) Free hair and make-up for me. Yey!

3) Volunteer talents. We know so many generous people.

4) Hubby taught a child how to play chess today. He likes doing that.

5) We love coming home to our super comfortable bed, especially after a long day at work.

Ah, life's simple joys!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

(I choose to rejoice over life's simple joys especially after the heartbreaking decision of the Sandigan Bayan on the Plea Bargaining Agreement.)

Hope your week started out perfectly too. *wink*

Happy Monday!

LIKE ENTENG KABISOTE

What do you call people who claim to dislike you and yet they:

1) Check your space, your pakain, your meetings and projects, where you are, how you've been, what you're wearing, where you live. (Obvious naman kayo!)

2) Stalk you on FB. (Huli ka!)

3) Read your blogs. (Hello po!)

4) Can't stop talking about you. (Thank you for the time and attention.)

So this is how Enteng Kabisote feels like. "Hi, Fans!"

I AM HUMBLED

On the March 11, 2011 Japan quake and tsunami...

"It makes us all feel small. It makes us realize how puny even the biggest, most clever things we humans make—highway systems, skyscraping towers, nuclear power plants and so on—truly are, in the natural order. It makes us humble, giving us a better perspective of our role in nature: We may have humored ourselves and seen the human race as master of nature; in truth, elementally, we are, and have always been, at its mercy.

The terrible twin disaster in Japan gave us a heightened sense of life’s very contingency; death is only an instant away. But even more, it gave us a sharpened sense of the utter limits of our own human race. We may work as hard as we can to build ourselves up, but when the Big One hits, we are reduced to our real size." -- The Philippine Daily Inquirer, Editorial, 14 March 2011
